Palmetto Cheese Contest

I just saw this contest on Facebook.  We discovered this yummy product in Charleston last year and now our local Publix carries it. If you haven't tried it, you have no idea what you're missing!

“Say Cheese” while enjoying some PC and you could be lounging ocean front. Take a picture of you and your friends enjoying Palmetto Cheese and post it on our Fan Page. The best photo will receive a 3 night stay for two at the historic Sea View Inn on Pawleys Island, a barefoot paradise since 1937. The stay will include ocean front accommodations for you and a guest along with 3 meals each day (an $825 value). Sea View Inn is birthplace of Palmetto Cheese and can certainly take care of any PC cravings during your visit.

What's better than having one great photo chosen? How about 2 winners!!! That's right, we are giving away 2 trips. The first selection will be our favorite picture (based on originality, creativity, and overall likeability). The second winner will be chosen by our fans. The fan favorite is the image that receives the most comments. So post your pictures and don’t forget to comment. A simple click could transport you to the South Carolina coast.

Your stay will be subject to availability and valid April 1 - May 26, 2010 or September 8 - November 1, 2010. Fans may submit multiple entries, but only one prize can be awarded per fan.

Airfare is not included in the prize. Winning photos must have Palmetto Cheese in the image in some format.

The Best BBQ in Georgia

Since 1929, Fresh Air Barbecue has been serving what myself and many others consider the very
best BBQ in the world. Some of my fondest childhood memories are long Sunday drives from our house in Dekalb County, down through McDonough to Jackson, Georgia.
If you need a real honest to goodness BBQ fix, check out the link below. I'm thinking a long Sunday afternoon drive is way overdue for me.

Travel Abroad for Medical Care

Although several television shows have covered this topic  recently, I really had never given it much thought until last year when I was exploring different options for my own medical condition.

I was fortunate in many ways. Too many to count. And I am very grateful.

My condition was not life-threatening, but at the time, my quality of life, energy level, and sense of well-being were severely diminished. What could it be? Did I have ovarian cysts, a hormonal imbalance, or something worse? Thankfully, I had a good doctor at Northside Hospital and another wonderful physician at Emory for my second opinion.

Before my first doctor's visit, I started my own research and by the time that I was preparing for surgery, I had finished five books and countless internet articles. And in between all the reading, I began to explore the idea of flying to Malaysia with my daughter for treatment.

At the same time, I learned of a friend's cervical cancer diagnosis and was shocked at the lack of care and compassion she endured.   Her phone calls were not returned by the nurses or office staff the same day. Her results were not readily available and each of the doctor's seemed more concerned with stepping on another physician's toes, than treating her.

A consultation for surgery was ignored without a referral to a surgeon which she had requested many times. My friend was told to wait and see what happened to the tumor after chemotherapy, internal, and external radiation. Any questions concerning diet, alternative treatments, or bio-identical hormone therapy were met by her oncologist, radiologist, and gynecologist with dismissive one sentence answers, if at all.

That was not my experience at all.  My doctors, nurses, and other health care providers were patient, attentive, and not afraid to answer any questions during my appointments. And my doctor at Northside Hospital called me at home, sometimes on the weekends, to either review my lab results, reschedule a surgery, or simply to check on my condition.

Dr. Horton, at Emory, spent over an hour discussing my medical options and condition during our first meeting.  Having him give me a second opinion gave me the confidence to know that I was making the right decision. Both doctors gave me their time. Their knowledge and patience gave me peace of mind which was priceless!

By the end of July, I felt more like myself. During surgery, a tumor was removed, not a cyst as we had thought. But, the news was good; my ovarian tumor was found to be benign and I was able to recuperate in Mexico with my daughter.

Sadly, my friend's health care journey did not follow the same path.

We spoke on the phone earlier this evening and now that the cancer has metastasized to her liver and other areas outside of the peritoneal cavity, she is experiencing agonizing pain and is only able to leave her bed a few hours each day, sometimes less.

She is now in good hands at the Cancer Treatment Center of America located in Zion, Illinois. I cannot say enough good words about the people who care for her there.  It is completely different than what she lived through here in Georgia.

But, I wonder, and probably always will, if she had sought treatment, or at the minimum, a second opinion, from a doctor outside the U.S. borders, one who had no accountability to her insurance company, one not paranoid about the cost of malpractice insurance in our ever litigious country, if her condition would be this grave today.

And when the issue is women's health care in America, is she the exception or am I?

Below is an article from the Medical Tourism blog.  The link for their website is listed below, too.For obvious reasons, this is a subject close to my heart.

Last year I learned that the most important thing to me about medical care is choice.

After watching my friend suffer these past nine months, I am even more determined not to have my health care choices limited by a doctor, insurance company, government, hospital review board, or a country's borders, not even my own.  I am not alone. According to the article, there is a growing number of patients, eager for information, who want to explore all the medical options available around the globe. In fact, USA Today cites this travel trend as one of the biggest in 2010.

Stay well and stay informed.

Why 2010 Will Be A Great Year To Travel

Just finished scanning the Travel Section of the New York Times and came across an article about the new hotels opening this year.
New York City is leading the way, with forty-six new hotels in 2010.
Houston, a city that I adore, will have thirty new properties. Don't you just love competition in the hotel industry?
So for those of us wanting to visit the Big Apple in 2010, experience Texas hospitality in Houston, or walk along Chicago's Miracle Mile, we'll have more choices than ever.  And if you're thinking that a trip to my hometown of Atlanta sounds appealing, there has never been a better time!
Time to start packing and make those reservations.

Snake in firewood reported on 11Alive News

Well, this should make the MWY think twice about hauling our firewood from the backyard to the deck without his gloves.  I just read this and honestly, I'll probably have nightmares about it.

A Poem About Our Girlfriends

Vivian Keeton Hinchey shared this on Facebook today. It touched my heart and I thought it was a wonderful poem to share with my daughter as well.

A Poem About Our Girlfriends
Someone will always be prettier.
Someone will always be smarter.
Some of their houses will be bigger.
Some will drive a better car. ... See More
Their children will do better in school.
And their husband will fix more things around the house.
So let it go, and love you and your circumstances
Think about it!
The prettiest woman in the world can have hell in her heart.
The most highly favored woman on your job may be unable to have children.
The richest woman you know, she's got the car, the house, the clothes~ might be lonely.
And the word says, 'If I have not Love, I am nothing.' So, again, love you.
Love who you are..
Look in the mirror in the morning and smile and say,
'I am too Blessed to be Stressed and too Anointed, to be Disappointed!'
'Winners make things happen~~ Losers let things happen.'
Be 'Blessed' Ladies and pass this on to encourage another woman.
'To the world you might be one person, to me you are special!

Delta fees and Mexico Specials from Atlanta

If you thought flying coach was bad enough these days, I'm sorry to say that it's going to get worse and more expensive. I just hate hidden fees when I travel.
Although, I schedule most of my trips on-line, it really irritates me that calling to talk to an actual employee of the airline costs me money. According to CBS Atlanta, Delta's baggage fees are going up and will now be the same as AirTran's charges.

We were unpleasantly surprised when we had to pay fees at the airport over the Christmas holiday season on our AirTran flight. We had never encountered this before because we had always been able to get the First Class upgrade on every AirTran flight.
On Airtran, there are no baggage fees for First Class. I wonder if Delta will have the same policy....

For a bit of good news, Bookit.com just sent over an e-mail with all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Carribean starting at $99 per person, per night.

There are some great specials under $550 including air fare from Atlanta for a three night stay. Just the cure we all need for our winter blues.

The details are listed in the links below:

Tamara and Simon Barney are getting a divorce according to e-online

Sad news for their family, but for those of us who have been watching the show for a while, I can't say this is much of a surprise.
Pretty ironic how things work out.
Vicki and Don are renewing their vows and according to e-online, Simon is accusing Tamara of some pretty serious transgressions.
Seems as though  they always had issues because of her son, Ryan.  In my humble opinion, Simon was more than fair to him.  Certainly more generous and forgiving than I could have been in the situation over driving a car without insurance. My own husband is a wonderful father, but he would never stand for that kind of behavior.
Hmmm, next season will be worth watching after all.
I really had second thoughts about the show after Jeana left, but it seems like her timing was impeccable. Jeana must be happy to have escaped the on-going drama. Oh well, you can bet that I'll be tuning in on Thursday night!

The more I know

The more I learn about websites, the more I realize how much I need to learn.

I built one, two years ago, in fact, for real estate.  Simple enough.  I bought a template, added my words, a few photos, linked to our listing services and "Voila", I had a website.

My goals now are much more difficult.

Just when I mastered my cell phone, it shattered and I had to replace it.  Tech comes slowly to me.

Cabin Fever

Trapped yet once again due to the ice on the driveway and serious cabin fever has set in.

Oh, how I long to sit outside, to set foot outside, to see something besides my four walls and the fireplace.

I love my husband and daughter, but I'd like to see other people.
Any other people.
Even obnoxious people.

 I've talked on the phone.

Blogged.

Checked on building websites.

Played cards with mini-me and the Mid-Western Yankee (I won last night in two out of three games).

Ate pork and carbs and a whole long list of food that I rarely allow in the house. Who cares if I get fat?  At this rate, I won't actually see anyone until sometime in May.

Shopped on-line for a condo in south Florida to rent for at least three months next year. That cheered me up. Briefly.

Cooked. And photographed the food out of boredom.

Cleaned the laundry room floor.

Drank Maker's Mark, wine and margaritas, although, not on the same night. If I can't leave the house soon, I might try that.

And even attempted a Google calendar for 2010.

Whined incessently to my MWY husband about the fact that the outside temperatures haven't reached above freezing in over a week.

MWY has built a fire every day.  Obviously, trying to ease his conscience about not sending me to Mexico before this latest cold front desended on Atlanta. And yesterday he ventured out for shopping, but I don't dare. A friend's car was hit on Friday night by another driver, not that unusual except that his Mercedes was parked in his driveway at the time.

I know I can't drive with ice on the roads; I don't even have the skills to walk in snow without getting injured. One ski trip in Vermont at age twenty taught me that sad fact.

If God intended for me to walk outside in this weather, I would have been born wearing a mink coat and snow shoes.

Checked the weather forecast.

I'm starting to depress my usually happy self.

Contemplating ways to pass another day indoors.  And spending next winter in Miami.

What A Way To Start the New Decade

Honestly, I really should not complain.

We started this year, as we do most every year, in a tropical location under starry skies, fireworks, and palm trees.  After visting with friends we met last year in Argentina and making new friends in San Juan, we danced with other tourists and local Puerto Ricans in San Juan as the television crews filmed the celebration.

Like many of my friends, I was happy to bid farewell to 2009 and the tumultous decade that preceded it.

The dot-com bust of 2000, 911, a war on terror, the housing bubble and the financial crisis were enough to give even an optimist like myself a few sleepless nights.

The decade however, was not bad on a personal level.

I met and married the love of my life, traveled, decorated and was blessed to watch my daughter grow and still have my World War II era parents and aunt here with us. New friendships were made and thanks to modern technology, old friends, have kept me sane thoughout every crisis for the past ten years.

Now looking outside at the melting snow, I am hopeful about the coming years.

Turning thirty was a sad time for me for so many reasons, thirty-five inspired my self-improvement kick and regular visits to a plastic surgeon, but forty, now just eight months and a few days away, feels like a true celebration...a victory...an event that demands dancing!

So no complaining from me; well, except that it's cold here and I'd rather be in Mexico.  But as far as 2010 goes, I couldn't be more hopeful!

Happy New Decade!
